A Useful Book for MRCP PACES: The Neurology Short Case

You know how Neurology strikes terror unto the psyche of every Internal Medicine postgraduate examination candidate (yours truly included).

There is just so much intricacies to the human nervous system that one just can’t help but be at awe at how adeptly neurologists reach a clinical bedside diagnosis so confidently and so convincingly.

Luckily, I have in my MRCP arsenal a very useful book to help me conquer that fear. This book is a rare gem amongst the neurology references.

The Neurology Short Case by John Morris, FRCP, FRACP is what it says it is. The book is intended for MRCP(UK) and FRACP candidates in the neurology short stations. Succinct and methodical, Neurology Short Case brilliantly presents information in an easy to understand way, as if you are being shown around the neurological ward eliciting important clinical findings with a clear-headed Professor of Neurology.

“I am not aware of any other books that have presented an approach to the patient with a neurological problem in such a clear and thoughtful fashion. I found this book extremely well written and shall certainly recommend it to students and residents. ” from Doody’s Review.

What impresses me most is the companion CD which comes free with the purchase of the book. The CD itself is worthy of the hefty price tag. There are 77 recorded video clips of various classical and some rare clinical signs of neurology. They are of a high quality and clearly depicts the masterly skills of an experienced neurologist.

At RM135, this book does not come cheap. But I believe this is a good investment. It will make Neurology seem less intimidating than it appears, a good enough reason to splurge the cash in my opinion!
