When the subject of Penang street food is broached, people seldom talk about Chee Cheong Fun. But indeed, Chee Cheong Fun has a special place in the taste buds of Penangites. What is so special about Penang’s Chee Cheong Fun is the thick prawn paste sauce peculiar only to this state.
We walked into this kopitiam called Seow Fong Lye Café to try out a Chee Cheong Fun stall. This stall was established in 1955 and has since been the top favourite amongst Penangites.

The doyenne of this place, Madam Lim Mei Fong is chatty and friendly. In a typical Penang Hokkien lilt, she revealed to us, much to our surprise, that the other famous Chee Cheong Fun stall in Soon Yuen Kopitiam (Jalan Kuala Kangsar) which we popped in the day before actually belongs to her daughter! Talk about family business!
Anyway, we wasted no time. We ordered two big portions and settled ourselves on the table. The food did not take long to arrive.

As expected, the sauce is very strong but tasty and the Chee Cheong Fun smooth and slippery. It is the perfect breakfast for one seeking the good’ol simple, homely, and most importantly delicious meal.
The place is located along Macalister Lane, George Town. Business opens from morning till noon only.
