For many practitioners of Internal Medicine in Malaysia, the acronym MKSAP may not immediately ring the bell of familiarity. Even when the acronym is painstakingly spelled out to read ”Medical Knowledge Self Assessment Program”, still many of them will scratch their heads wondering if that is another fancy name for some aptitude tests designed to screen through medical school applicants.

But mention ‘MKSAP’ even cursorily to those handful of informed medical doctors who live and die by evidenced-based, up-to-date internal medicine, you are bound to be swarmed with requests for more information.
So what is MKSAP?
To quote a review, ‘MKSAP delivers another comprehensive review of internal medicine and its subspecialties. Eleven separate booklets cover the topics of internal medicine foundations, cardiovascular medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, rheumatology, neurology, hematology and oncology, infectious disease, pulmonary and critical care medicine, general internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolism, and nephrology.’

This is at its root a self-study program filled with peer-reviewed content covering the critical information in the core of internal medicine provided by a team of more than 115 respected leaders in 11 subspecialties.
MKSAP tests the practitioner’s knowledge using the well-trusted examination format of ‘Best of Five’ multiple choice questions. Each branch of medicine offers more than a hundred MCQs discussing a multitude of essential internal medicine topics. Following each question is the editors’ carefully written advice, wisdom and pearls, tips on why a certain answer may be inferior to another and the latest evidence to support it and useful pointers on important clinical decisions making.
I have personally tested the electronic version of this program. And being a discerning disciple of the craft, I must contend that this is an excellent source for reviewing the vast pool of knowledge required for Internal Medicine. Candidates for MRCP Part 2 Written will find it especially rewarding given the very similar style and mode of questioning presented.
The print version retails at USD469 and the CDROM at USD419. Get yours today.
