大家好，谢谢大家的出席。今天，新郎非常地俊俏，新娘也很娇美。
虽然我是加影育华毕业生，但非常 ‘ pai seh ’， 我的华语却只有半桶水，比新娘 ‘Jenny’ 还差耶！
为了不丢人现眼，就让我用一桶水的英语来和大家谈谈我的好朋友，Kenny。
Good evening ladies and gentleman.
On behalf of Kian Yee (aka Kenny) and Jenny, I thank everyone for coming! I am sure you’ve all had a lovely evening so far. The food is fabulous and the bride absolutely stunning!
For those of you who don’t know me, my name’s [withheld], I first met Kian Yee on one faithful day back at our medical school. It was the first day of a new semester at school, we were registering to start another tedious academic year at the teaching hospital. There he was, looking nerdy and studious, with his vintage large rounded spectacles perched on his nose all posed to jump on the question: “What’s the difference between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics?”
So thank you Kenny for giving me this opportunity to be your Best Man, it’s a great honor to be in this place.
Back a year ago, I received an email from Kenny who was at that time deep in the Sarawakian wilderness. I read to you now an excerpt:
“Hello people… I hope things are turning good for you all… I will be getting married on the 16th June 2007 in Kajang… My future half is a Kayan nurse from Long Lama… I am inviting you to my wedding. If you can make it, or happened to be there by coincidence, do make it for the occasion…. I hope to see you all in splendour and joy!”
Kenny, ever the generous and kind hearted doctor, has at last been rewarded with the love of his life.
Kian Yee is a very special doctor. I recalled the day a few years ago a conversation we exchanged during our turbulent years of housemanship. I asked him,”Why did you choose to serve in the distant hinterlands of Sarawak (which as a matter of fact so far away from his home in native Kajang)?” He replied, thoughtfully and compassionately, “If nobody is gonna go, who else is left to take care of the indigenous people?”
This is so characteristic of Kenny: Genuine, honest, truthful, selfless and responsible. And the marriage is going to make him an even better man.
I feel very lucky to have Kenny as a friend. He’s an extraordinary person and is now getting what he thoroughly deserves – not least of which was meeting Jenny.
Well, I guess serving in the rural heart of Sarawak was indeed rewarding. Years of toiling in the muds and rivers has brought Kian Yee into the arms of his future wife. It is amazing how two individuals of grossly differing backgrounds could be united in such compatible ways which only serve to complement each other, culminating as you can see in today’s wonderful wedding.
To finish, I want to congratulate the happy couple. Jenny, thank you for making Kenny so happy! Your impeccable Mandarin sure helps! Take from me my good mate, hold on to him tightly and look after him! Kenny, I have never seen you happier and you are a very lucky groom – you’ve married Jenny, who’s quiet but warm, reserved but loving, humble but beautiful and who despite her obvious upbringing, speaks even better Chinese than you do. Truth be told, Jenny deserves a good husband like Kenny.
Ladies and gentleman please join me in rising to your feet and raising your glasses to give the couple a massive massive toast.
And the usual saying! May your love be modern enough to service the times and old fashioned enough to last forever.
